Artifice and life collide in real time in "Overthetop". Squeaking and resonating, it is fused into a facetious and ramshackle cabaret wherein lurks a strange gravity.
Marie Baudet - La Libre Belgique

It all takes place in the isolation of an artistic residency somewhere in the Great North. An abstract space, as unreal as a shack surrounded by nothingness... or by bears.
Two artists are there to engage in creation. Hence their presence in this enclosed space, the reason for their cohabitating, their game, their reason for being. Two women on stage try to behave as artists might, adopting the postures which belong to artists as much as to a collective memory, those of divas and rock stars, idols and icons, and others who have withdrawn from the humdrum, the everyday, the contingent, and the derisory. OVERTHETOP. But these women talk through figures, sliding into words borrowed from others, among them Marina Abramovic, Patti Smith, Annie Lennox, Bruce Springsteen, Sinead O'Connor, Amy Winehouse, Nick Cave, Anouk, and Meryl Streep...

In the isolation imposed by such a residency, this life in limbo with neither audience nor spectator, the two women talk without words, as their roles collide, where artist meets woman, woman meets mother , and mother meets actress. They do not look at one another, rather they register one other's presence. They do not communicate, rather they confront one another. We know nothing of their story, yet behind this wall of artifice, reflections intertwine on art, life, and femininity, engaging bodies and people, in the here and now, and in the artificiality of the stage space and the truth of experience.

THERE'S A CRACK IN EVERYTHING THAT'S HOW THE LIGHT GETS IN. Leonard Cohen

OVERTHETOP is the fifth instalment of the Conti Sparsi project and it is a female duet that brings together a team of recognized artists on the Brussels scene: Ayelen Parolin (dancer and choreographer) and Ina Geerts (actor and singer) on the stage; Stéphane Broc (video artist and musician), Simon Stenmans (lighting engineer) Fabienne Damiean (costume désigner) and myself, Mauro Paccagnella (choreographer and director) to provide external support.

OVERTHETOP emerges from a performance space in black and white, a timeless free zone that measures the friction between a musclebound word and an overexposed ladies' cadence.

OVERTHETOP stands contiguous with two women that have alternating polarity, whose impending phases outline a complementary state: rigorous in its form, raw in its urgency and firm in the obsession for accuracy.

OVERTHETOP stands at the crossroads between the noise of a female universe without concession and the urgency of risking a strong gesture, a last cry, to ensure that the voice is not absorbed by the void, by deterioration or the threat of some form of disappearance.

IT TAKES TWO TO TANGO

Ina, Ayelen and I have studied and adapted documents, atmospheres and testimonies from the female punk and rock universe for the show.

The musical avant-garde scene of the 70s and 90s, that of Nico, Patti Smith, Dani Klein (Vaya Con Dios) and Amy Winehouse as well other acknowledged artists are used as sources of inspiration.
The artistic and human urgency that drives or has driven these rock icons continues even now to inspire their admirers.

In this respect, our OVERTHETOP is a tribute to the integrity of a mature, complete and visionary train of female thought.
The poetics that emerge in complete precision or to excess, push us into an indefinable space-time, without concession, one that is profoundly steeped in materials, desires, recognitions and memories. The duet performed can but be interpreted as a sounding board.

Press review

"OVERTHETOP": TWO WOMEN, URGENCY AND CONTRADICTION
It is less a dialogue, more a juxtaposition of sentiments that Mauro Paccagnella uses here, through the voices and bodies of these "characters" who are always willing to force a pose in order to better overcome it, jostling, and revealing the cracks beneath. From invective to confidences, borrowed from various texts and major artists or rock stars (from Marina Abramovic to Amy Winehouse or Nick Cave), the words spring, collide, and roll like Ayelen's accented R's, awakening echoes, smoke, dust, and ghosts.
